Compounding
What is Compounding?
Pharmacy Compounding is the long established tradition in Pharmacy Practice that enables Physicians to Prescribe and Patients to take medications that are specially prepared by Pharmacists to meet patients individual needs.
Millions of Americans have unique health care needs that off-the-shelf prescription medications can not meet. These patients need personalized medication solutions mixed safely by trained, licensed
Pharmacists because these medications are the only option to achieve the desired health care outcome. The Pharmacists work with Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, and Veterinarians to create customized medication solutions for patients and animals whose health care needs are not met by manufactured medications.

Why do we need Compounding?
Compounding is what our whole profession is based upon. Compounding meets the needs of patients in many forms that can not necessarily be met by the big manufacturers. Compounded Prescriptions meet special needs for special situations:
Patients who need specialized dosing due to age-related issues (Pediatric or Geriatric) Patients who have:
- Multiple Health Care issues that impact a drug's absorption or elimination
- Allergic Reactions to inert ingredients such as binders or dyes in commercially available products
- Difficulty absorbing the medication via the traditional delivery process of a commercially available product, i.e.: can't swallow or are sensitive to topically applied products, Hospitalized patients who need lifesaving intravenous medications, Veterinary patients that range in size from a parakeet to an elephant and everything in between are just a few of the patients who are dependant upon personalized medication solutions.
